How to advise on internet for a second home
A home used two weekends a month has different needs from one used for remote work throughout the summer. Before looking for a tariff, establish how long it will be occupied and what connection it needs during the rest of the year.
Define how the home will be used
- Expected months and days of use, number of people and devices.
- Remote work, video calls, television, gaming or just browsing.
- Equipment that needs a permanent connection: cameras or home systems.
- Whether mobile data can be used and the approximate consumption.
Coverage must be checked at that address
Do not assume availability because the customer already has fibre with an operator at their main home. Check the full address, access type and installation conditions for the second home. Confirm who can receive the installer and the lead times before promising a date.
Compare the cost over the period of use
Consider the fees for every month the line must remain active, activation or installation costs, equipment and cancellation conditions. If the offer requires a minimum contract term, do not present early cancellation as a cost-free option.
A lower monthly fee can end up costing more for very short use. If the catalogue offers a suitable mobile solution, also compare its data allowance, coverage and usage conditions; do not assume a tariff allows the service to be suspended in winter.
Calculation example, not an offer
For a hypothetical tariff of €30/month, keeping the line for twelve months means €360 in fees. Using it for only two months does not reduce that amount if it stays contracted all year. This example explains the calculation and does not attribute cancellation or minimum-term conditions to any operator.
What to put in writing in the proposal
Installation address, selected service, monthly fee, period being compared, installation, equipment and cancellation conditions. Distinguish the calculated cost from the details still to be confirmed.
